How to install OS X El Capitan

A new Divided View, Safari, Correspondence, Notices, Maps, and Photographs features in the new OS X El Capitan, and more. You have to update the operating system on your Mac to get your hands on all this new stuff.

It's easy if you want to carry out a standard OS update. It's downloaded from our official website. Here, we'll run over the process of installing Yosemite's EL Capitan.

It’s about preparation

There's a little bit of prep work you can do before you install the update. Before you continue, our post on how to get your Mac ready for OS X 10.11 El Capitan is what you can read. It encompasses:

Hardware compliant and older versions of OS X

  • Encryption difficulties

How to download El Capitan

The El Capitan update is given by Apple via its App Store. The file is a little over 6 GB, so you might want to download it at a time when you have other things to do, depending on your internet access and the amount of traffic in the App Store, how long it takes to download. Or you can use your Mac while you wait, so when the update is finished,  able to save your job and leave.

Open the App Store app in your Apps folder to download El Capitan or go to the Apple menu > App Store. You'll probably notice El Capitan straight away, particularly if you go to the App Store shortly after the official release or download El capitan from our official website. Apple will probably have a banner promoting El Capitan at the top, but if you don't see one, you can probably find it in the far right column in the Free section you may have a banner promoting El Capitan at the top.

And on El Capitan, you can still do a quest. Tap on the Download button when you get to the El Capitan website of the App Store. You will need to input your Apple ID and password, and the installer will be downloaded once you have done so.

Apple is heavily promoting El Capitan in the App Store. This special banner appeared in the Updates section.

Copy the installer

The installer will start automatically when the download is completed. In the installer, don't press Proceed yet. What you do not know is that once the update is completed, the installer is copied to your Apps folder and then removed.

You should get the installer from the App Store if you do use it again. Yet I love making a copy of the installer. In order to make a bootable flash drive that I can use, I always have to conduct OS installations; it's much easier than waiting for the update.

You need to keep down the Choice key to copy the installer while you drag the Install OS X El Capitan app to the copy destination in your Apps folder. You'll make an alias, not a clone, if you don't keep Choice down.

El Capitan Install it

OK, now in the installer window you can press the Proceed icon. (Go to your Apps folder if the installer is not running and double-click the Install OS X El Capitan app.) You will be asked to agree and then check that you have agreed to the license agreement.

You must enter your username and password to proceed. You will be able to install the installation, restart your Mac and execute the installation. During the installation process, the Mac could restart again. It takes several minutes to load, so you may want to go for a walk, call your wife, take a nap, or catch up on tasks while the app is doing its job..

The Mac will restart after the update is finished and you will need to log in with your username and password. If you try to email diagnostic details to Apple, you will be asked if you need to log in with your Apple ID, and then the setup screen appears and goes down. You're done.

Want to do a clean install of El Capitan?

When you run the operating system on a blank storage unit, it is a clean download. Through making a bootable El Capitan installer and then using it as your Mac's boot drive, you can do this. To uninstall your drive, you run the Disk Utility and then continue with the El Capitan installation.

You use Migration Assistant to migrate the data from a Time Machine backup until the installation is completed.

Why should you do a clean install?

Maybe your storage system has been partitioned and you want to modify the scheme. Or maybe over time you have built and deleted several applications and want to get right of any remaining components of software-if this is the case, don't recover your data from a backup of Time Machine. Copying your files manually and reinstalling your apps.
